Haybale bench plays with ideas involving the American suburban experience, and the different ways that humans interact with their natural environment. A blend of white picket fences, the protective vinyl that people put over their couches, and summer hayrides…
Constructed by hand with poplar wood and many layers of brushed-on milk paint and a wipe on whey-based poly finish. The cushion is made of upholstery foam and real hay sealed inside of clear vinyl. Sitting on this low bench, one is surprised by the firmness of the cushion and the slight wheeze of air as the air escapes from the vinyl seams under pressure. As the hay is supported by a stiff foam interior, the vinyl inflates again slightly every time the user leaves.
